The Graduate Certificate Program in Gerontology was first approved as a graduate concentration by the Kansas Board of Regents in 1985 and converted to a certificate program in 2004. The certificate program allows students to combine a research interest in aging with graduate study in a specific academic department. Completion of the certificate program enables students to apply specialized knowledge of the social, psychological, demographic, and biomedical aspects of aging to their professional disciplines. The Certificate in Gerontology represents an additional credential for graduate students from a variety of academic fields who are preparing for careers in research and teaching or professional practice.
The requirements are based on the recommendation of the Association of Gerontology in Higher Education for graduate certificate programs.
Students admitted to the Graduate Certificate Program in Gerontology must either have regular graduate status as current KU students or be admitted as nondegree C graduate students. Students complete 15 hours of course work including a research practicum or field placement. The certificate program enables students to integrate knowledge of gerontology into their own academic disciplines or professional training.
Course work is distributed as follows:
1. Gerontology proseminar (3 hours).
2. Gerontology core courses (6 hours). One course selected from each of the following different approaches to the study of aging: biology of aging, psychology of aging, social gerontology.
3. Gerontology elective (3 hours minimum).
4. Research practicum or field placement (3 hours minimum). Credit earned for a master’s thesis or doctoral dissertation on aging may satisfy this requirement.
Students must maintain grade-point averages of 3.0 or better in all courses taken to satisfy requirements of the Gerontology Certificate. At the conclusion of the program, the student should ask the gerontology adviser to verify that the requirements for the Gerontology Certificate have been met.
Any KU student in a degree-granting department or school at the master’s or doctoral level is eligible to apply for admission to the Graduate Certificate Program in Gerontology. Nondegree-seeking students may also apply.
